New wave of phishing attacks serves malware to PCs and Macs

In the past few weeks, I’ve noticed an alarming increase in fraudulent email messages coming to some old, well-established email addresses of mine.

It’s not just the quantity of messages that’s noteworthy, it’s the quality as well. This particular wave of attacks includes some attacks that are frighteningly real looking. And they’re being used to serve up a toxic brew of malware to unprotected systems.

Anonymous spies on FBI / UK Police hacking investigation conference call

A recording of a confidential conference call between the FBI and UK law enforcement officers at the Metropolitan Police has been released by Anonymous on the internet.

The inference has to be that hackers were able to secretly access the call because they have compromised a police investigator’s email account.

The 16 minute conversation, which has been posted to a number of sites including YouTube, discusses ongoing investigations into hackers associated with Anonymous, AntiSec and LulzSec.

Word to the Wise: Phishing scam claiming to be from Better Business Bureau targets consumers

E-mail phishing scams using the Better Business Bureau’s name and logo continue to proliferate across the web. Most of the e-mails carry the famous BBB torch logo and come with the subject line “Complaint from your customers” or “Urgent: Your Prompt Reply is Necessary” but new subject lines are still popping up.

The e-mails have a link or an attachment containing malicious phishing malware that steals information, often with devastating results. We also believe that the virus lies dormant on the computer for a period of time, only to eventually resend itself to the victims contact list.
